Stott Wood Company has been a family owned and operated business from the beginning. It was started in the 1937 by Norman Ellis "NE" Stott, using horses, mules, and crosscut saws to cut timber for Urania Lumber Company in Urania, Louisiana. They kept horses in pens in the woods for jobs. Upon starting the company, N.E. had one vehicle - it hauled logs during the week, and was a family vehicle on the weekends. They eventually graduated to crawler tractors and power saws. Stott Wood Company hauled the first load of logs into the new GP Plywood Mill in Urania, Louisiana in the mid 1970s. The company was officially incorporated in 1978.
Bobbie Ray "BR" worked in the woods with his father as a teenager and then went to Northwestern State University, where he attained an education degree. After teaching sixth grade from 1958 until 1965, he joined N.E. in the woods full time. After the death of his parents, B.R. purchased his siblings' shares of the company in 1991, and grew the business both in size and equipment. In the early 1980s, they had begun using cable skidders. The first grapple skidder was purchased in 1987, the first sawhead was purchased in 1990, and the first pull-through delimber was purchased in the late 1990s.
BR operated Stott Wood Company until 1995, when his sons bought majority sharesy and it officially became a father and son business. Continuing the family legacy of his father, B.R. hauled the last load of logs out of the LP Mill (formerly GP Plywood Mill) in Urania, Louisiana in 1999.
Brothers Randy and Ricky worked in the logging woods all throughout their lives, and later alongside their father B.R.. In 2000, Randy and Ricky purchased the remaining shares of Stott Wood Company and continued together to build upon the legacy of this family business. Randy serves at President, Ricky as Vice President. They were able to expand into two active jobs in 2002, and into three active jobs in 2008. There are currently four logging jobs in operation, harvesting on a contract basis for Hunt Forest Products and on their own tracts, purchased by Stott Land and Timber, from the US Forest Service, TIMOs, REITs, and other private timber owners. Estimated annual production is 150,000 tons and most of the logs and pulpwood are delivered to mills in the central and northeastern area of Louisiana.
Stott Transport was founded in 2011, with Ricky serving as President and Randy as Vice President, Currently hardwood lumber and cross ties are hauled out of the Hunt Mill in Olla, Louisiana to locations in Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi, among others. Plywood and cores are hauled out of the Hunt Mill in Pollock, Louisiana to destinations across the southern and central United States.
Stott Land and Timber was founded in 2016, and currently buys select blocks of land for timber growth and harvesting. There are plans to eventually begin site development and other projects.
Randy and Ricky pride themselves on ethical logging and timber management practices. They are members of the Louisiana Forestry Association and the National Federation of Independent Businesses. They are Certified Louisiana Master Loggers themselves, and all job foremen have also received certification. They have also been featured multiple times in Southern Logging Times.
